Do I Need a Motorcycle MOT Test?

While a valid motorcycle MOT certificate is required for your road tax and your insurance, not every vehicle has to undergo a test. If you motorbike is under three years old, for instance, it is considered exempt. Likewise, any motorcycle over 40 years old is also exempt, providing no significant changes have been made in the past 30 years.

What Isn’t Checked During a Motorcycle MOT Test?

There are several key components that are not covered by the standard motorcycle MOT test, often to the surprise of newer bikers. These include the engine, the clutch, and the gearbox, tire pressures all of which are exempt from the test. For your own peace of mind, we can check these essential components as part of a full motorcycle servicing.

Following each stage of its motorcycle MOT test, your bike is graded on a 5-point scale. These are:
  • pass
  • advisory
  • minor
  • major
  • dangerous
Achieving the last two grades is an automatic fail. Any repair work will need to be completed and your bike will need to pass another MOT test before you can ride it on a public road.
